A couple of weeks ago, one of the professors in my department left his office for five minutes and didn't bother closing his door. While he was gone, someone ran in and snatched his laptop. The warning went around, and now everytime I walk ten metres to get a drink of water, I feel the need to close and lock my door. Damn thieves.

Doesn't your laptop have a built-in security port? You should consider buying a security cable. I saw it on Dave Chalk Connected, and they're not too expensive, plus most new mobile devices (including some MP3 players) have them. You can watch that episode at www.chalktv.com. It's the episode on the title page titled "Mobility," though I did see it on TV.

My laptop has a security port, yes. And I have considered buying a security cable. I'm still considering it, in fact. They tend to run $50+, however, which is why I haven't bought one yet. A small amount compared to the price of the computer, yes, but still a decent sum of money for a student. And it wouldn't save me from having to lock the door, because neither of my officemates has a security cable for their laptops.
