As one of Andrew Sullivan's readers noted, Republican policy seems to have undergone a shift in recent years. Where once they paid lip service to the desires of the Christian Right while going after independent voters with moderate policies, they now seem to be employing the opposite tactic. Yes, they won't commit to policies that damage short-term business interests, but that doesn't mean they can't get even more socially conservative if they believe that's the best way to win the election.
