We spent the weekend on a deck improvement project. We set out to get a grill, an umbrella, chairs, cushions, and some plants and assorted plant things (soil and pots to plant them in, fertilizer to keep them alive, brackets to hang them with, et cetera).

B already had one large, soil-and-weed-filled box on his deck. For that, we bought three varieties of tomatoes and some red peppers. For cooking, we also bought a little herb box and some oregano, sweet basil, and cilantro to grow in it (along with some English lavender just for fun). And for pure decoration, we purchased a princess lily plant and a lovely dark blue pot which we suspended from the railing of the deck.

Unfortunately, the plants were all we got done in the four hours we were out. Everything else will have to wait until next weekend. Apparently this is what happens to people who insist on going to bed at 4am and rising at noon.

Ah, I love gardening- our balcony at this apartment is too small to put anything big out, like tomatoes. We have a big pot of four o'clocks and a thriving shamrock plant, but I have hopes for some nice vegetable and herb plants after we move to a new place next year.

Sounds like fun. (But, it took you four hours to choose out plants?)

A word of advice: be fastidious about pinching back the cilantro, or you will very quickly end up with coriander instead.

(But, four hours!?)

Well, traffic was really bad on Saturday, so it took us more than thirty minutes to get there. And we spent much of that time comparing grills and grill prices at a three different stores, with some driving in between. (We didn't end up purchasing one because by the time he decided what he wanted, the store at which he wished to purchase it was closed.) And we ate lunch. So really, it was more like an hour actually picking out plants, and the rest doing other things that unfortunately did not result in forward movement on the deck.

Thanks for the advice about the cilantro! :)
