One of my favourite things about vacations is the way they reset everything, breaking down old, fruitless schedules and creating the possibility for more productive patterns. With that in mind, I spent an hour or so yesterday coming up with a new schedule for the fall. This schedule is a little more general and flexible than many of my old schedules. I'm hoping that means I'll actually be able to stick to this one. So far it's worked pretty well, apart from a moderately bad headache that led to me going home for a long nap this afternoon.

On a very happy note, I got paid today for the government report I wrote. Yay! Even though several people have told me that I'm being underpaid for the work I did (and they may be right, but since the rest of the money went to fund the project we were working on rather than to line someone else's pocket, I won't worry too much about it), it's still a nice bonus. Now I need to decide if I'm going to spend any of it, and if so, on what. I'll probably put off major purchases since I still don't know what my financial situation will look like this year (and I really wish they'd tell us a little earlier how much money we're getting and from where).

We left Philadelphia on Tuesday and head for New York. We arrived around 2 or so, checked into our hotel, and then rushed down to the water to try and catch the last harbour tour of the day, which left at 3. We were lucky enough to catch a cab almost instantly and unfortunate in our choice of cab driver: he didn't believe us when we told him which pier we needed to go to, telling us that only ferries leave from there, and instead he dropped us off near the pier from which most tour depart. As it turned out, our tour actually does depart from the mostly-ferry pier, and we arrived at the correct pier just in time to watch the last boat pull away.

Since we couldn't do the tour, we decided to explore the city instead. We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering Manhattan, ending our tour with a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge and arriving just in time for our 9:00 reservation at the River Café. (It's an excellent restaurant, by the way. NetworkGuy, a New York native, recommended it to me and it is completely worth visiting if you want a nice dinner accompanied by a fabulous view of Manhattan.) The walk across the bridge was very pretty, and only provoked a few moments of panic in me (I'm not a big fan of either heights or bridges that I have to walk across). I particularly liked the way the pedestrians were elevated above the cars: it made me feel much safer.

The next day we got up early (for us) and caught one of the morning harbour cruises. It was a ninety minute cruise that gave us a nice look at the Statue of Liberty and some good stories about the various buildings of New York which at one point or another have been declared the tallest building in the world. The weather was quite a bit better than the previous day, which mollifed us a little for the necessary change in plans.

After the cruise we met up with [livejournal.com profile] villagechick for lunch at the Rockefeller Center, which I knew nothing about beforehand and learned a fair bit about during. After that, we grabbed our luggage from the hotel and hit the road again.

(So VC, when are you and VB coming to Toronto?)
