I've got two meetings today. One runs over lunch (11:00-2:30) and one runs over dinner (6:00-8:30). I suppose that works out after a fashion--late lunch followed by a late dinner--but I'd really like to know why people as this university have such a fondness for scheduling things during meal times.

For lunch, I think you're correct that it was the only time available. As it turns out, we went out for lunch during the meeting, so I didn't starve. As for supper, 6:00 seems to be the standard start time for all evening activities here. I haven't figured out why, but I find it mildly irritating because I'm never hungry at 5:00.
